Frequent Questions.

  • Does your child have difficulty interacting with his/her peers?

Social skills training at The Behavior Exchange, teaches children how to interact in a complex social world. They learn the very specific rules and behaviors of interacting with others. Most children who undergo this training will be able to go to school, the park, birthday parties and family gatherings and have at minimum a basic set of skills and behave appropriately.

  • Do you have to ask your child over and over again to do simple things and still he/she doesn’t comply?

One of the first things we do when a child enters our program is to teach him/her to comply and to reward the right behavior while extinguishing refusal. Parents are able to have positive interactions with their child. When they ask their child to do something, the child does it, and the parents can praise them. When a child is fundamentally compliant, everything in a family’s life becomes a much smoother, easier and a more pleasant process.

  • Do you feel like you’re constantly reprimanding or correcting your child for inappropriate behavior?

We teach families how to use positive reinforcement that promotes good behavior in their children. To jumpstart this process, The Behavior Exchange offers one-on-one sessions with parents. Children’s behavior improves, enabling them to learn skills in many areas and enjoy interacting with others and participating in many age appropriate activities in real-life environments.

  • Does your family limit the time you spend out in the community or with family and friends because of your child’s behavior?

This is a common situation and can lead to a family feeling isolated. If left untreated, the problem can get worse. At The Behavior Exchange, we teach parents intervention techniques that curb a child’s inappropriate behavior while in public. Your family can be happier when your child’s inappropriate behavior is no longer dictating your family’s lifestyle.

  • Is your child’s behavior causing a burden on siblings?

The Behavior Exchange offers intensive behavorial training for children, as well as training and inclusion of the entire family. Siblings are encouraged to participate. This family-centered approach shapes a child’s behavior for the better by helping parents be consistent with their parenting styles and making the rules the same for all children in the family. Siblings begin to feel that rules are fair, begin building healthy and balanced relationships while learning therapeutic techniques. We encourage sibling involvement in our programs and invite siblings to attend sessions so we can facilitate these important relationships.

  • Does your child have a limited diet?

This can cause an undue hardship on a family, if parents have to make different meals for one child than for the rest of the family. Through intervention, children can learn to expand the foods they will eat. Even if the family wants to conform to a specific diet, variety and acceptance of new foods is possible and important.

  • Does you child wake up during the night, and as a result, doesn’t get enough sleep?

Through intervention, maintaining a regular sleep schedule is possible. Parent training in these techniques allows everyone to sleep tight.

  • Is your child having difficulty with potty training?

Through the intensive potty training program at The Behavior Exchange, children learn how to toilet independently. You’ll save on expenses, like diapers or pull-ups, and you’ll enjoy a much cleaner and less interrupted environment. Since potty training is often a prerequisite for admittance into most school programs, you’re options regarding school also improve as well as your child’s level of independence.

  • Is your child lacking the ability to communicate his/her wants and needs verbally, and you have simply learned how to “read” what it is they want?

Through our intensive communication and language training, we teach children how to communicate. We also teach parents techniques on how to “require” language. Children experience the freedom to communicate and choose. The family enjoys more frequent communication that is positive and a foundation is created that makes more complex communication and social interaction possible and easier.

  • Does your child engage in behaviors that seem odd or repetitive?

This type of behavior often occurs due to a lack of knowing “what else to do.” We teach appropriate ways for children to replace these behaviors with more meaningful and typical activities that are enriching to the child.

  • Does your child have tantrums in crowds, when he/she hears loud noises occur, or when there is a change in routine?

Changes can cause confusion or be overwhelming for a child. By setting up these types of scenarios and training the child how to deal with these issues, it becomes much easier for a child to know how to handle the situation when it occurs in real-life.

  • Do you feel you have to “walk on eggshells” around your child so not upset them?

As the parent, you shape your child’s behavior. Sometimes, children learn how to shape their parent’s behavior. Through language and compliance training, the child can learn how to behave more appropriately. We also teach parents how to change their child’s behavior rather than conform to it by normalizing the parent/child relationship to a more positive state.

  • Does your child accept “no” for an answer?

We can train children to accept “no” for an answer. This is a common problem that affects so many children in our society. By teaching your child that “no” means “no” and to handle the situation gracefully, not only is your job much easier, it serves the child in so many other environments in their life.

  • Do you have concerns about your child learning to read, comprehending information, writing or understanding math concepts?

The Behavior Exchange Early Start Program (B.E.E.S.) is designed to build a strong foundation in pre-reading/reading, pre-writing/writing, and pre-math/math concepts to ensure your child has the skills to grow and learn. B.E.E.S. instruction includes one-on-one and group sessions. We train children in a way so they can acquire information in various formats that schools use. Additionally, through Precision Teaching, we are able to accelerate reading, writing and math skills through intensive, fluency-based instruction and focus on higher and higher complexities of material, while ensuring success at every step.

  • Does your child ride a bike and engage in recreational sports/activities like other children do?

We believe all children in good physical condition should be able to ride a bike, and we’ll work with your child to do so. We also ensure that children can interact on the playground, master basic ball play, and if there is an interest in a particular sport or physical activity, teach more complex play. Children learn to participate in partner, group and team activities, healthy leisure skills and enhanced opportunities for social interaction.

  • Does your child explore new toys and learn how to play with them or do they have limited interests?

We strive to expose your child to many types of activities and materials to nurture a love of learning new things and enjoying a variety of activities. We teach them the basic concepts universal to materials and activities for their age group and capitalize on special talents and interests to make them well-rounded individuals.

  • Are there activities that your whole family enjoys doing together?

We help families find activities of mutual interest so that the family as a whole can interact with each other in meaningful and fun ways that promote strong, positive relationships.

  • Does your child play independently?

Building on your child’s interests and mastery of skills, we work to ensure that your child can be as independent as possible and occupy their time appropriately with hobbies and other interests. Parents and other family members can take some much needed time for themselves and for the activities they enjoy.

  • Can your child dress himself/herself?

Independent living skills, such as dressing, grooming, eating and toileting, are a priority at The Behavior Exchange to ensure your child is as self-sufficient as possible. Morning and bedtime routines….smooth sailing.

  • Are you concerned about your child’s aggressive behavior towards himself/herself or others?

Aggression often occurs because of a lack of communication skills and other deficits in skill areas. We ensure that children learn communication and other appropriate ways to express themselves, while requiring them to accept “no” and consequences of their actions. The need for aggression diminishes and children learn to communicate and interact in appropriate ways while meeting the standards expected of them at school, home, and in the community.

  • Do you and your partner disagree about how to parent/discipline your child?

Parent training at The Behavior Exchange brings consistency into your home and allows both of you to understand the science that makes behavior analysis so effective. You’ll learn detailed, consistent and specific interventions that bring consistency to the way you handle behavior issues.

  • Are you concerned about your child’s success at school?

We can help make sense of issues that arise in the school setting, whether they’re related to behavior problems or academic difficulties. We work together with teachers and school personnel to remedy the problems. We also recommend specific goals and protocols that will ensure a rigorous education and success at every step. Collaborative consultation bridges the gap and keeps your child’s progress moving in the right direction.
